It was confirmed that Toad and Toadette, characters from the Super Marios Bros. series, are from the genderless race of Toads. They take on their own gendered characteristics but that is by personal choice.
In a livestream by Gamespot, the producer of Captain Toad: Treasure Tracker, Koichi Hayashida, gave insights into Toad and Toadette including their gender. Nintendo never settled on an official gender for the character Toad and have now made the race genderless.
Hayashida also stated that Toad and Toadette are neither related nor romantically involved. “Perhaps it would be more accurate to say they are adventure pals,” he said.
The Toad race was also disproved that they are some form of mushrooms even though the resemblance is uncanny. “That’s one of the great mysteries of the Mario universe,” Hayashida stated.
