An 18-year-old was recently arrested for allegations concerning the PlayStation Network and Xbox Live DDoS hacks that occurred on Christmas.
The arrest took place in Southport, a seaside town in Merseyside, England. The man is currently detained on suspicion of unauthorized access to computer material and with plans to commit more offenses, and “threats to kill.”
GameSpot officially confirmed with Thames Valley Police that the man was associated with the PSN and Xbox Live attacks. He is also accused of being a part of “swatting,” which is a criminal offense were individuals make emergency calls to the police to get them to show up at their houses, armed.
UK cybercrime authorities joined together to make the arrest, including the South East Regional Organized Crime Unit, the National Cyber Crime Unit, and the FBI.
Along with the arrest, a multitude of “electronic and digital devices” were confiscated to be inspected by forensics units.
Craig Jones, SEROCU Cyber Crime Unit head, stated:
“This investigation is a good example of joint law enforcement cooperationAdditionally, Association of Police Officers cyber security lead Peter Goodman said, “This arrest demonstrates that we will pursue those who commit crime with the false perception they are protected within their own homes or hiding behind anonymous online personas.”
in relation to a type of criminality that is not restricted by any geographical
boundaries. We are still at the early stages of the investigation and there is
still much work to be done. We will continue to work closely with the FBI to
identify those to who commit offences and hold them to account.”
The alleged culprits in the PSN ad Xbox Live attacks are a group of hackers called Lizard Squad. Currently, this group has not been proven to be responsible. Earlier this month, a member of the group was arrested. However, the charges were not related to the attacks.
President Barack Obama has also taken measures against the offense by outlining a new legislative proposal.
