According to a post on Nintendo's official Japan site, the company is planning to discontinue the XL model of the 3DS in that country. The post shows the old XL model with "ending production soon" labeled underneath them.
Nintendo is reportedly stopping the production on the XL in favor of the New 3DS XL which is already out in Japan. Since it's release the New 3DS XL has out sold the old model tremendously, making over 1.2 million in sales in this year alone.
No word yet if Nintendo of North America will follow suit, but seeing as the New 3DS hasn't even been released yet here it's hard to imagine they will.
