Dark Souls Beaten Using Only Rock Band Controller

by Graham Taylor

Beating Dark Souls, the popular, yet difficult action RPG, is in and of itself a noteworthy feat.. However, some people like to take it the extra mile.

Benjamin “Bearzly” Gwin completed the game using nothing but a Rock Band guitar controller, and some patience.

Using a custom controller mapping, Gwin was able to complete the game with limited movement. The wammy bar would move the character forwards, while tilting the controller would move the character right.

With the effect switch, Gwin could rotate the camera left. All other actions were mapped to the guitar’s fret buttons. Using this scheme left Gwin unable to block or use heavy attacks, features which are usually useful under normal circumstances.

These limitations hardly fazed Gwin, who managed to complete the game in just over 11 hours, taking only three tries to defeat the final boss. He said his main strategy was to don heavy armor and halberds in combat, giving him both protection and reach, and then unequip everything when not fighting in order to increase his speed.

Amazingly, this is not the only time Gwin has beat Dark Souls with less than optimal conditions; he once played the game using only one hand.

Gwin says he looks to continue challenging himself, as he will attempt to be Dark Souls 2 using only his trusty Stratocaster, a bit of luck, and a whole lot of skill.

Below is an video of Gwin fighting Ornstein and Smough, which is easily one of the most frustrating challenges in the game.
