Fully expecting a cheesy 90’s throwback comic after reading
the preview yesterday, my expectations were not too high for Mighty Morphin’
Power Rangers. This was probably the right mindset to have when reading,
because it almost ended up winning me over in the end. The issue should have
just been called Power Rangers Vs. Herbie the Love Bug, because that was what
it ended up as.
Lord Zed turns Blue Ranger Billy’s “rad” bug into a monster
after the Rangers captured Rita Repulsa. And because it’s Billy’s car, it
cannot be harmed! The Rangers don’t do much fighting while they are morphed and
instead use their powers to make a ramp that would disable the vehicle. This
was where they had their first chance to win me over; I would have loved to see
some quality fighting scenes against Zed’s minions or a monster that they could
actually hurt.
Like every Power Ranger episode, the formula stayed the same and
Zed makes the monster gigantic after it has lost against the Rangers. When the
bug became large it transformed into a giant fighting robot, which prompted the Rangers to summon their Megazords. I liked the look of the Megazords. It
reminded me a lot of Transformers and didn’t make me think of a guy fumbling
around in a cardboard suit like the television show did. Most of the comic's action comes
into play with the Zords as they try to stop the car from running rampant
through the city.
At the very end of the issue the Rangers managed to stop the
car, but they did it without using a finishing move like they would in the show,
which let me down a bit. Now that they have the potential to pull of special
effects without making them look cheesy I feel like they needed to demonstrate
how cool they can look to pull fans to
the comics.
The comic version of MMPR was so close to getting me to like
it, but as of issue #1 I could not get past the few cheesy lines of dialogue
and the missed opportunities that they had to pull fans in like a #1 issue
should be doing. This issue felt like it should have come as later to use as filler. Hopefully, future issues will be able to hook
the reader a bit more and show what the comic has the potential for.
