The third Hobbit film will debut December 18, 2014 with the title "The Hobbit: The Battle of the Five Armies," director Peter Jackson announced via his Facebook page Thursday.
The Hobbit films were originally slated to end after two installments, the latter titled "The Hobbit: There and Back Again."
In a Facebook post, Peter Jackson said:
"'There and Back Again' felt like the right name for the second of a two film telling of the quest to reclaim Erebor, when Bilbo’s arrival there, and departure, were both contained within the second film. But with three movies, it suddenly felt misplaced—after all, Bilbo has already arrived 'there' in the 'Desolation of Smaug.'"Jackson also teases that "There and Back Again" might be used for a collector's box set once all the films are out on Blu-Ray and DVD.
