Mojang Being Purchased by Microsoft

by Nick Dowell

The rumors are true. Mojang is being purchased by Microsoft for $2.5 billion USD.

A post on the Mojang website confirms the deal, saying it is because Notch "decided that he doesn't want the responsibility of owning a company of such global significance."

Apparently Mojang was looking at a few buyers, but chose Microsoft because it appeared to be the best choice for the evolution of Minecraft.

"There are only a handful of potential buyers with the resources to grow Minecraft on a scale that it deserves. We've worked closely with Microsoft since 2012, and have been impressed by their continued dedication to our game and its development."

The post also confirms that founders Notch, Carl, and Jakob are leaving the company to work on other projects.

No word now on what plans Microsoft has with the company, or with Minecraft, but Mojang is extremely confident in what Microsoft can do.
