Internet Hoax Leads to Microwaved iPhones

by Graham Taylor

Less then a week after its release, a new internet hoax has some people convinced that the new iPhone 6 can be recharged via microwave. Though there have been no confirmed “fatalities” to any phones, the rumors of this faux feature continue to circulate.

The “prank” originated from the infamous website 4chan. User of the message boards collaborated, and were successful in starting a viral Twitter movement, flooding the platform with fake tweets praising the new feature; they also succeeded in creating the following graphic:

Dubbed as “Wave” technology, the fake advertisement claims that iOS 8 devices can be charged wirelessly with any household microwave in under 2 minutes, and that the new features will be available when uses update their devices.

This isn’t the first time 4chan user have tricked people into creatively destroying their phones. After iOS 7’s release last year, members of the website ran a similar campaign, in which they convinced Apple user that upgrading to iOS 7 would make devices waterproof. This was not the case, and many phones met a watery grave.

While it is still uncertain whether or not people have fallen victim to this cruel joke, hopefully all the rumors will be laid to rest before any serious damage is done.

As a final note, just to be clear; do not put any electrical devices into your microwave for any reasons whatsoever.
