Number of Women in Game Industry Rising

by Nick Dowell

A recent report from the International Game Developers Association revealed that women comprise 22 percent of the gaming industry. This number is up from 11.5 percent in 2009.

"Men still dominate the industry," the report says. Of the 2,200 developers asked, 76 percent identified as male, while two percent listed themselves as transgender or "other."

The survey also revealed that nearly 50% of the of the development work force earn less than $50,000 annually. The other half of the respondents can be broken into 34 percent earning between $50 and $100,000 and 19% earning more than $100,000.

The average respondent says they have worked in the industry for nine years, and the primary reason for working there is "to earn a living doing what I enjoy." Of the respondents, 61 percent say they want to work in the field for an indefinite period of time, while 39 percent say they want to leave to find a "better quality of life."

It's good to see that there's some diversity as the field is expanding and retaining a lot of its talent. With any luck, those margins will soon move to minuscule levels.
