Today at a special event in New York City, Amazon unveiled it’s long rumored Android gaming console in the form of Amazon FireTV. The device is essentially a set-top box that streams Kindle Fire to your TV.

The device is meant to compete with Apple TV and the many Roku devices out now. Amazon VP, Peter Larson, showed off the gaming capabilities of the Fire TV, while also pointing to the high price of current consoles and the difficulties of streaming games from iDevices to Apple TV.

Thousands of games are going to be made available to the console next month from developers like Ubisoft, EA, Sega, Double Fine, and Gameloft. Also unveiled was the Amazon Controller, which will retail for $40 and come bundled with Amazon Coins which can be redeemed for games.

Games can also be played with the Fire TV remote or a custom app Amazon is releasing next month.

Games that were shown today running on the Fire TV included, a Fire TV-Specific version of Minecraft, free-to-play racer Asphalt 8, a Monster Inc. runner game, and a third person shooter called Sev Zero which was developed by Amazon’s own gaming studio.

The Fire TV is available today at $99 from the Amazon site. Below you’ll find some specs for the new console.
