Nintendo Direct Reveals New Titles and Features

by Eric Himsel

Today Nintendo released its first Nintendo Direct for 2014, which focused on information on new games and upcoming releases.

The first reveal of the night was that Little Mac from the Punch Out! series will officially be a playable character in the upcoming Super Smash Bros. for Wii U and the 3DS. While there is not currently an official release date, Nintendo confirmed that the games will be launched in 2014.

Next came a new trailer for Mario Golf World for the 3DS. There will be a new single-player mode called “The Castle Club” where players may play golf using their own personal Mii as a character. Players will be able to customize their Mii’s clothing, which will effect their golfing status. New training areas will be included to improve putting and long drives. Mario Golf World will launch on May 2.

Nintendo then introduced a new feature to Kirby Triple Deluxe, where players can gather new collectibles, such as key chains and sun stones, to improve their game-playing experience. If players use the StreetPass feature they can gather better items and exclusive key chains. Kirby Triple Deluxe will launch on the 3DS on May 2.

Nintendo's next 3DS news focused on Yoshi’s New Island. New to the title is the Mega Egg-dozer feature Yoshi can use to destroy structures and enemies around him. New abilities were also announced, such as a rock breaking jack hammer, a submarine skill and super Yoshi, which acts like star power from the Super Mario games. Yoshi’s New Island will be released for the 3DS on March 14.

Today Nintendo released a sequel to the Steel Diver game entitled Steel Diver Subwars on the 3DS eShop. The title is a tactical FPS.

A new 3DS title was announced during the video entitled Rusty’s Real Deal Baseball. Players can buy baseball games at an in-game store. Some of the games include hitting, catching, umpiring, and other elements of baseball. The games can be bought with real world money, however players can haggle the in game store and have the price lowered. Rusty’s Real Deal Baseball will launch in April on the 3DS shop for free.

Another new 3DS game that was announced was Pokemon Battle Trozei. The title is a puzzle game that will feature every single Pokemon. Defeating them in the puzzle game will allow players to capture the Pokémon. Battle Trozei will also feature 4 player co-op. Pokemon Battle Trozei will launch on March 20.

Nintendo then announced NES Remix 2, which will play much like the original game but with titles from the later days of the NES. The game will also include Super Luigi Bros which is a reversed version of the original Super Mario Bros. Instead of always moving to the right players will now move to the left. Luigi also comes playable with his signature super jump. NES Remix 2 will be released on the Wii U eShop on April 25.

Game Boy Advanced games will finally be playable on the Wii U starting in April with Metroid Fusion, Mario and Luigi Super Star Saga, and Yoshi’s Island: Super Mario Advance 3.

Monster Hunter 4 Ultimate was confirmed for release in America during the presentation. The title will be released early 2015.

Saving the best news for last, Nintendo revealed real in game footage of Monolith Soft’s X. The gameplay looks identical to Xenoblade Chronicles except that it does appear more polished. The player in the demo slashed away at an enemy creature then proceeded into a giant Mech-like suit and continued their onslaught. The game still has no official title or release date but Nintendo said to sit tight while more details unfold.

Finally Nintendo rapped up with a new trailer for Bayonetta 2. The trailer gives new story details and battle footage. Bayonetta 2 will launch in 2014.

Overall this Nintendo Direct was a good look at future titles. While new details of gameplay and release date were revealed Nintendo still lacks the shock facture of new titles. While the Pokemon Battle Trozei and Rusty’s Real Deal Baseball were new titles, they were not the games Nintendo needs to propel forward. We can only hope that X and Bayonetta 2 are closer to launch than we think.
