Watch the first three minutes of The Last of Us: Left Behind

by Joseph Knoop

Sony and developer Naughty dog have released the first footage of the upcoming The Last of Us DLC, Left Behind on their company blog. Reportedly the first three minutes of the game, the cutscene features a strained reunion between Ellie and her older friend Riley.

The DLC, which takes place shortly before the main game, focuses on the relationship between the two girls, and how events conspired to shape Ellie into the girl Joel would eventually meet.

“With Left Behind, we wanted to make a single-player DLC that was as fully crafted as our main campaign,” said Jacob Minkoff, Lead Designer at Naughty Dog. “There’s a great deal that we’ve done with the DLC that exceeds, let’s say, the level of narrative density that we had in the main campaign.”

One of the main environments Ellie and Riley will explore is a long-abandoned mall, which developers say will allow the girls to see how people might have lived before the outbreak of infection.

It’s no secret to anyone whose played The Last of Us that this DLC will likely have a sad ending, as hinted by characters mentioning the loss of Ellie’s friend.

“See it or not, there’s a truth behind them that they really need each other,” said Yaani King, who voices Riley. “It’s kind of the one relationship they can both count on.

In terms of gameplay, fans of the main title will be glad to know that multiple faction combat is coming to Left Behind. Players will have to contend with both infected and human enemies at the same time, which developers say will allow Ellie and Riley to pit the two against one another. Ellie’s sections of gameplay in The Last of Us certainly warrant such an update. Though still a tenacious combatant, Ellie obviously had less brute strength than Joel, a grown man with years of experience killing people, dead or alive.

The Last of Us: Left Behind releases on February 14th, just in time for that special zombie-slaying sweetheart.
