Windows 7 May Not Support DirectX 12

by Andrew Hughes

Despite the large number of gamers and users of the Windows 7 operating system, Direct3D’s most recent version of their graphics API may not be supported by Windows 7. The official blog addressed this issue saying “We will link to our hardware partners’ websites as they announce their hardware support for Direct3D 12”.

Although this dated blog post avoids the question, a recent presentation by AMD’s Richard Huddy revealed DirectX 12 would not be supported on Windows 7. Many gamers may have to upgrade their setups to play upcoming titles to avoid compatibility issues.

Microsoft has yet to comment on this issue, leaving it up to speculation whether this is untrue or even a method to sell more copies of recent operating systems. DirectX 12 should run on most existing cards according to the developer blog, but it won’t be rolling out on new games until the end of next year.
