Atari Documentary to be Released on Xbox Live this Month

by Scott Minor

Atari: Game Over is going to be released on Xbox Live on November 20, says the movie's director Zak Penn.

The documentary covers the rise and fall of video game company Atari. The documentary's main focus is Atari’s 1982 release E.T.: The Extra Terrestrial for the Atari 2600. E.T. has been called the worst video game ever and responsible for the video game crash in 1983.

The film also covers the unburying of over a thousand cartridges buried by Atari. In April, the filmmakers hired a crew of people to dig in a landfill in Alamogordo, New Mexico where Atari tried to get rid of unsold copies of E.T. and other games they wanted to get rid of.

Atari: Game Over was originally produced by Xbox Entertainment Studios, which Microsoft has since shut down.

Over half of the cartridges found are going to be sold by the Alamogordo City Council this holiday season on eBay. The rest of the cartridges were sent to museums around the world.

The film’s director Zak Penn is known for his writing for the films The Avengers, The Incredible Hulk, X-Men: The Last Stand, and X-Men 2.
