Microsoft is looking to expand its popular franchises like Halo, Gears of War, and Forza by coming up with a new one. Phil Spencer, head of Xbox, claimed in an interview with IGN that new IPs are in development, stating that the games will “push the boundaries.”
During the interview, Spencer said, “Yes, there are first-party internal and external studios working on games that are not announced. I think that will always be true, just to be clear.”
Spencer continues by saying that the games will not belong to any set categories such as “space marine shooter” or “racing” types. Microsoft’s focus is stepping out of the norm and building compelling stories.
"I think new stories, new characters give us a new canvas to try new things," Spencer said. "[Sunset Overdrive is] a great example of that. It's a game that isn't like anything else in our portfolio, and I think that's great. I want to continue to invest in things that push the boundaries. I don't need another military space marine game. I don't probably need another racing game. In terms of trying things that are new and have a unique reason to be in our portfolio, it's gotta be a commitment from us as a first-party, absolutely."
Spencer also teased that Rare, a British internal studio, is doing “something new that feels like a Rare game.”
Spencer also said that he will be traveling to the studio next month to see a new pitch for a game. However, Spencer repeats that he does not want Rare to become the Kinect Sports team, even though no new titles are in development for the brand.
